Variety reported on October 15 (local time), a day after announcing the layoff of approximately 1,000 employees, many of whom were in the content department, that Netflix continued to cause a stir with the news that Bela Bajaria was leaving her position as Chief Content Officer after 10 years with the company. She joined Netflix in 2016, initially in charge of television, and was appointed Chief Content Officer in January 2023.
According to leaked information, Bajaria's successor is Peter Rice, former chairman of Walt Disney Television, who is expected to begin his job next week. The appointment comes as Netflix seeks to elevate its content portfolio, particularly in the US and Canada, to create works that resonate with and attract a global audience.
Besides personnel changes, Netflix also faces growth pressure as viewer engagement shows signs of stagnation. According to TheWrap's analysis, total viewing time on the platform reached 97 billion hours in the first half of 2026, an increase of only 2%. During the same period, Netflix's stock price fell by more than 40% in a year, leading investors to increasingly question the company's ability to maintain its growth momentum.
